Cretin, Rosemount end Warriors' run at state tourney

Derek Owen's tears were worth a thousand words.

As Brainerd Warriors third baseman Jeff Grow (left) hangs his head, teammate and pitcher Ryan Burggraff removes his cap to show his anger after the Cretin-Derham-Hall Raiders scored two of their three runs in the fourth inning en route to their 6-1 win in the Class AA State Tournament quarterfinals at Siebert Field in Minneapolis on Thursday.
The senior first baseman's high school baseball career had ended, along with the Brainerd Warriors' improbable season, after a 10-0 loss to the Rosemount Irish in the consolation semifinals of the Class AA state tournament at Siebert Field on Thursday night.
Following a 6-1 loss to unbeaten and top-ranked Cretin-Derham Hall in Thursday afternoon's quarterfinals the Warriors didn't rebound to play Rosemount. Brainerd managed only an infield single by Ryan Burggraff in the first inning and a hit batsman in the third against Rosemount right-hander John Brunswold and the game ended via the 10-run rule with no outs in the bottom of the fifth.

Brainerd Warriors outfielder Justin Bundy watches the flight of his ball after connecting with it late in the game.
Brunswold, who needed only 71 minutes to shut down the Warriors, ended Brainerd's season with a 17-12 record.
"I feel real bad for the kids, especially for our seniors, that we didn't come down here and play like we're capable of playing," said Warriors' coach Lowell Scearcy. "We'll never know what would have happened, and I'm not necessarily talking wins and losses, had we played well.

As a Cretin-Derham-Hall baserunner slides back to first base safely, Brainerd Warriors' first baseman Derek Owen lets out a yell as he waits for the ball in the Class AA State Tournament quarterfinals at Siebert Field in Minneapolis on Thursday.
"I hope our seniors remember they were on two conference championship teams and made one state tournament trip. They should be proud of that."

Several fans, who braved the cold and rainy weather, erupted with cheering after the Brainerd Warriors were introduced before the Warriors and Cretin-Derham-Hall Raiders played in the Class AA State Tournament quarterfinal game at Siebert Field in Minneapolis on Thursday.

The Irish scored five earned runs off Brainerd starter Matt Parker in 1 2/3 innings, two earned runs off reliever Brett Thompson in 1 1/3 innings and three earned runs against reliever Jake Francis.
Rosemount right fielder Josh Moore went 3-for-3 with four RBI, including a two-run homer to left-center in the third. Alex Nunez and Brunswold each had two hits, with Brunswold driving in a pair of runs.
"Rosemount really swung the bats well," said Scearcy. "They probably wish they had swung like that earlier in the day against New Ulm (a 4-1 loss)."

The Irish scored three times in the first with Borrell and Moore ripping RBI doubles and Brunswold a run-scoring single. They added two runs in the second on a Parker wild pitch and Nunez's RBI single.
Moore's home run put Rosemount ahead 7-0 in the third. Brunswold and Moore drove in Rosemount runs in the fourth for a 9-0 edge. Lonnquist's run-scoring single to center in the fifth ended the contest.
Quarterfinals
Cretin-Derham Hall 6, Warriors 1
The Raiders made Brainerd their 39th consecutive victim by scoring three runs in the fourth, two of which were unearned, and adding one run in each of the last three innings.

Brainerd Warriors catcher Kyle Berg yells encouragement to his teammates after smacking a 386-foot solo homer in the sixth inning of the Class AA State Tournament quarterfinal game against Cretin-Derham-Hall at Siebert Field in Minneapolis on Thursday.
C-DH's 11 hits backed the three-hit complete game of right-hander Keith Arnold, who struck out two and walked two. The only blemish against Arnold was catcher Kyle Berg's 386-foot solo home run to center in the sixth. Only three other Warriors advanced beyond first base and Berg had two of Brainerd's hits.
C-DH coach Jim O'Neill said Arnold has been as much the Raiders' ace as Brian Whinnery, who's 10-0 and won last year's Class AA title game.
"We knew they would be big swingers," O'Neill said of Brainerd. "So we thought we would come at them with off-speed stuff a little bit. Brian is more of a power pitcher. Keith has a little more finesse."
Burggraff also fired a complete game, allowing four earned runs, walked three and struck out five.
"I've always wanted a shot at them," said Burggraff, who fired 153 pitches. "You always hear about how good they are and we found out they are a good team. I think we held our own with them."

Brainerd Warriors senior pitcher and the starter for the game, Ryan Burggraff, warms up in one of the the University of Minnesota Gophers bullpens before the game.
Burggraff held his own for three scoreless innings. After consecutive singles by Luke Vogel and David McMahon, third baseman Jeff Grow threw wildly after fielding Mark Runyon's ground ball, scoring Vogel. J.P. Gagne followed with an RBI single to left, scoring McMahon. When outfielder Nate Huber overran Gagne's single for an error, Runyon scored.
Brian Gornick delivered an RBI single in the C-DH fifth, Vogel added a sacrifice fly in the sixth and Brian McQuillan smacked an RBI single off the bag at third base in the seventh to complete the Raiders' scoring.
Nick Birk, Gophers' recruit Jack Hannahan and Runyon each had two hits for the Raiders. Five other Raiders each had one hit.
"We had a couple chances to really bust it loose but we didn't," said O'Neill. "Gagne had a key hit and our 7-8-9 guys had a couple big hits.
"Our 2-3-4-5 guys are pretty tough. They're there everyday. The other guys hit some singles and doubles. We spread it around pretty good."
