Biz Buzz: Baxter welcomes Dunham's Sports
Dunham’s Sports hosted its grand opening June 1.
The addition in the Westgate Mall is the chain’s 138th store. Store Manager Andrew Rakow said they are on pace to have more than 200 stores by the end of the year.
“We are extremely excited to be here,” Rakow said.
The store is a full-service dealer with sections for the outdoors with camping supplies and items for hunting, fishing, golfing, tennis, along with any number of sports and activity. There are bikes and kayaks, Vikings jerseys, Twins apparel, beach towels, coolers, batting gloves, basketball hoops, work boots, clothing, lawn chairs, fire rings, hydration backpacks, life jackets, grills, snorkels and ski ropes, paddle boats, sunglasses, fitness equipment from punching bags to treadmills and exercise bikes.
The store hired 26 workers and expects to add more. Rakow ran the St. Cloud area store, but said the Brainerd/Baxter area is where he wanted to be from the beginning.
Nor-Son, Baxter, broke ground on the $39 million new Sanford Health Thief River Falls Medical Center on May 29. The company reported more than 100 people were present for the ceremony, which marked the beginning of the new 133,000-square-foot medical center. Construction begins this month and the project is slated for completion in the fall of 2014.
Nor-Son is the project construction manager for this $39 million health care campus.
Northwest Carpet of Brainerd announced plans to update its facade and showroom. The business, which specializes in floor coverings, has been owned by Russ Caughey for 37 years.
“This is something we’ve wanted to do for quite some time now,” said Caughey in a news release. “Even though we have a strong customer base and have been in business since 1975 it’s important that the image we project on the outside of our building matches the service customers have known they can rely on when they step inside. We have such a nice location on Old Highway 371 we may as well take advantage of it.”
The business is just off Business Highway 371, or South Sixth Street, and Buffalo Hills Lane in south Brainerd.
Bercher Design & Construction is completing the facade work.
“We are delighted to be working with Russ to update the look of his building,” said Brent Gunsbury, president of Bercher Design & Construction.
At the Westgate Mall, work is going into fitting out a 4,700-square-foot space for retailer — rue21. The Westgate Mall noted a recent Fitch Ratings report that clothing chains are boosting their capital spending this year to $35 billion versus $29 billion in 2009.
Eidco Construction will oversee the construction for rue21 at the Westgate Mall in Brainerd and Baxter and in Watertown, S.D. Rue21, a young adult store, has 770 stores in 46 states and is headquartered in Warrendale, Pa. The retailer describes itself as offering a “broad assortment of the newest emerging fashion trends in apparel and accessories for girls and guys” by providing “fashionable clothing for less.”
