Bauerly returns to Minnesota after serving in key leadership and management roles in Washington, D.C., most recently as a commissioner of the Federal Election Commission and serving as chair of the agency in 2011.

Bauerly has extensive experience in law, management, and public policy. As a FEC commissioner, she is responsible for directing all substantive and administrative operations of the agency.

“Ensuring that hard-working Minnesotans have the training and certification needed to fill the skill gap employers are facing is important to all Minnesotans,” Bauerly said in a news release.

Prior to her appointment to the commission, Bauerly served as legislative director for U.S. Sen. Charles E. Schumer of New York. Bauerly developed and implemented a broad policy agenda including working with the Joint Economic Committee of Congress to assess and identify solutions for economic and employment challenges. She also coordinated initiatives to improve opportunities for employment and economic development in New York.

She has also worked in private practice in both Minnesota and Washington, D.C., most recently as a lawyer at Fredrikson & Byron in Minneapolis where her clients included large and small Minnesota businesses.

Bauerly grew up in Benton County, Minnesota, and worked in her family’s road construction business during and after college. She graduated summa cum laude from Concordia College in Moorhead, graduated cum laude from Indiana University School of Law-Bloomington, and received a master of public affairs from Indiana University’s School of Environmental and Public Affairs.

Bauerly’s resignation from the FEC is effective Feb. 1; she will assume her new role at DEED on Feb. 25.
