WSB projects honored by ACEC Minnesota
WSB & Associates announced two of its projects received industry recognition from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Minnesota (ACEC-MN) at its annual Engineering Excellence Awards ceremony Jan. 31.
The north-south corridor with railroad overpass in Staples received a Grand Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Minnesota (ACEC-MN). This project involved constructing a two-lane north-south collector (urban and rural) roadway and a bridge over the BNSF Railway and U.S. Highway 10. The project need was centered on alleviating the traffic delay and safety issues associated with the existing at-grade railroad crossings located at Highway 210 (Sixth Street) and Seventh Street.
These two crossings were the only locations connecting the north and south sections of the community and were separated by about 300 feet. The city of Staples had wanted an overpass over the railroad for more than 50 years.
The College Drive Reconstruction in Brainerd received an Honor Award from ACEC-MN. This project involved reconstructing College Drive from a two-lane roadway to a four-lane divided roadway in Brainerd and Baxter. Three roundabouts, two traffic signals, drainage, large block retaining walls, and extensive sidewalk and trail improvements with a connection to the Cuyuna Lakes Trail were included. A benefit of the project is improved and safer access for motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists to Central Lakes College, Brainerd High School and the single- and multi-family residential uses along the corridor.
