Sanford, Essentia recognized for comprehensive stroke care
FARGO—Sanford Health and Essentia Health have been recognized for providing comprehensive stroke treatment, although by different accreditation organizations.
Sanford Health has been recognized as an Advanced Comprehensive Stroke Center by The Joint Commission, which Sanford said signifies that Sanford Fargo meets the standards to treat the most complex stroke cases.
Criteria to gain the recognition includes providing a dedicated neuro-intensive care unit and neuro-critical care around the clock. It also includes having a cerebrovascular neurosurgery team capable of managing complex brain vessel pathology with microsurgery and other techniques.
"We know the sooner stroke patients receive treatment, the better their outcomes," said Dr. Michael Manchak, Sanford stroke neurologist. "Patients and their families can now be close to home and stay in North Dakota for the emergency care they need."
Essentia Health in Fargo received comprehensive stroke center certification from DNV GL-Healthcare, a global certification body. The designation affirms that Essentia in Fargo is ready to handle a full range of stroke-related medical complications, the health system said.
"This certification lets our community know we have the resources and commitment to provide the best possible stroke care," said Megan Carlblom, a registered nurse manager of Essentia's stroke program in Fargo.
The DNV GL-Healthcare certification is based on standards set by the Brain Attack Coalition and the American Stroke Association.
