A debate on the need for added staff in the county's social services accounting department was quickly resolved when it was found short staffing caused the county to miss out on about $10,000 per month in state reimbursement. Plus, the county is $500,000 behind in billings.

Nine area dancers from C-I and Brainerd will be performing at Jack Murphy Stadium in San Diego during halftime of the Holiday Bowl football game. There will be 125 dancers from 12 states. The show is choreographed in part by Cindy Clough, Brainerd Kixters coach.

Christmas trees here come in many shapes and sizes, but rarely do they come from Alaska. When Flossie and Ben Clark attended their daughter's wedding in Soldatna last year, Flossie said all she wanted for Christmas was a spruce tree. Daughter Wanda didn't forget, and shipped them a 4-footer.
60 years ago (1957)
A muffled explosion, then a wall of flame which shot up from the front of the house, completely destroyed the home of the Frank Rasinski family in Barrows. All their possessions and Christmas gifts were lost. There was a lack of water since Brainerd's auxiliary tank truck was hauling milk for the creamery.
80 years ago (1937)
A 75-year-old Brainerd man, who was struck by an auto as he walked across the street at Quince and S. 8th Street two days ago, has died of head injuries. The car that hit him slid on the icy pavement. It was Brainerd's first and only traffic death of 1937.
100 years ago (1917)
Christmas Day will be ushered in by bells and good cheer. Early morning services will be held at Catholic and Scandinavian churches, and later in the day by other churches. The six prisoners at the county jail will get a chicken dinner with pie.
