Benefit planned for Jodi McGaffey

There will be a benefit for Jodi McGaffey from 3-7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at Lake Region Christian School.

McGaffey, who is married to Pastor Dave McGaffey, has been diagnosed with colon cancer for the second time. Surgery was successful to remove part of the cancer but Jodi McGaffey will still need four weeks of radiation treatment and six rounds of chemotherapy.

The benefit will include a pulled pork supper for a freewill donation along with a silent auction and gun drawing.

Brainerd Legion upcoming events

The Legion Riders will meet at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 8.

The 40 et 8 will meet 3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9.

The special dinner for Friday, Oct. 12, will be Bob Harting's barbecue ribs for $11. Walleye dinner is also available for $11. Serving begins at 5 p.m.

Sarma luncheon planned

IRONTON—Ironton American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 443, 232 Fourth St., Ironton, is hosting its annual Sarma luncheon (homemade cabbage rolls, boiled potatoes, veggie, dinner roll, coffee) along with a bake sale and craft and vendor sale Saturday, Oct. 13.

Bake sale and craft/vendor sale will be 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., while the luncheon will be served 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. To-go orders available.

Pinetree Patchworkers Quilt guild to meet

BAXTER—The Pinetree Patchworkers Quilt guild will meet 6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 8, at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, 6190 Fairview Road, Baxter.

Program will be Linda Arganbright who will speak on the Checkerboard Dresden pattern.

The business meeting will follow the program with show and tell.

Backus Legion events set

The Auxiliary's final 2018 breakfast and a fish fry fundraiser for the Backus Fire Department and Emergency Responders are among upcoming October events at the Backus American Legion.

The Auxiliary breakfast includes fried or scrambled eggs, pancakes or French toast, sausage and bacon, juice and coffee for $7 a plate, $4 for kids under 7, served from 7:30-11:30 a.m. Oct. 14. The breakfasts are served the second Sunday of the month from March through October with proceeds going to veterans, active military, community, youths and other auxiliary programs.

The annual all-you-can-eat fish fry fundraiser for Backus fire and rescue units will be served by the Sons of the American Legion from 5 p.m. until gone Oct. 13. The meal includes

deep-fried or baked fish, au gratin potatoes, coleslaw and a dinner roll for $10. There will also be a seven-round meat raffle with five packages per round for a $1 ticket.

Brainerd Garden Club meeting set

The Brainerd Garden Club will meet 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, at the Northland Arboretum.

There will be an installation of officers. Program will be Garden Design presented by Jeff Dirks, Central Lakes College instructor. Hosts: Bob and Mary Kennedy and Jeanne Larson.

Wadena Whirlaways Square Dancers to host a dance

WADENA—The Wadena Whirlaways Square Dancers will be hosting a dance Thursday, Oct. 11, at the VFW in Wadena.

Larry Fruetel is the caller and the cuer is Donna Stone. The theme is Western Hoedown. Plus dancing begins at 7:30 p.m. and mainstream dancing at 8 p.m.

Area senior dances

Senior dances will be 1-4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, at the Motley Ten-Hi with music by Marie and the Boys; 1-4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, at Waukenabo with music by Andy and Stu; and 1-4 p.m. Oct. 13 at the Aitkin Legion with music jams.

American Diabetes Association, Brainerd Lakes Area Chapter, to meet

BAXTER—The American Diabetes Association, Brainerd Lakes Area Chapter, will meet 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, at Prairie Bay Restaurant, 15115 Edgewood Drive, Baxter.

There will be a presentation on "The Truth about Hearing Loss" by Jordan M. Gran from Miracle Ear in Brainerd.

A diabetic-friendly lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m. and the speaker will be from noon to 1 p.m.
