20 years ago (1994)

Three students from Brainerd High School were awarded trips to the 46th Annual Boys State this summer to be held at St. Olaf College in Northfield. Brent Stark, Tim Munns and John Vukelich were chosen by American Legion Post 255 to represent Brainerd.

30 years ago (1984)

A man who led Brainerd Police on a high-speed chase early this morning gave officers a good chuckle. Officer Ray Goeritz chased a car at over 65 mph on Washington Street before stopping him. The man offered to be a mechanic for the police “to get their cars running faster.”

40 years ago (1974)

(Photo) DNR employees are shown as they install metal grating that will serve as a carp trap in the Nokasippi River at the S. Long lake outlet. Joe Fraune, DNR area fisheries manager, said carp in the river pose a threat to game fish in the chain of lakes.

60 years ago (1954)

Mary Tornstrom, veteran high school instructor here, was honored by the students of Washington High School when the “Brainonian” yearbook was dedicated in her honor. The editors presented her with the first copy of the 1954 book, accompanied by an orchid.

80 years ago (1934)

The Sagamore open pit mine on the Cuyuna Range resumed operations today after many months of idleness. It was the second mine to open this spring, the other being the Evergreen several weeks ago. About 60 men on a rotating basis will be employed.

100 years ago (1914)

I've worked at the Brainerd Dispatch with various duties since Dec. 7, 1983. Starting off as an Ad Designer and currently Director of Audience Development. The Dispatch has been an interesting and challenging place to work. I'm fortunate to have made many friends, both co-workers and customers.
