20 years ago (1997)

In 1996, folks in the county treasurer's office spent a lot of time at the copy machine. They made 1,414 copies of birth certificates, 152 of marriage licenses, 465 new marriage licenses and 549 passport applications. "I've never seen so many people traveling," said treasurer Laureen Borden.

30 years ago (1987)

The Minn. Public Radio board voted to apply to the federal govt. for funds to build a public radio station in the Brainerd area. It would be part of the Pine to Prairie Project aimed at bringing radio and TV here. The transmitter and tower site of the $160,000 project is 12 miles northwest.

40 years ago (1977)

The county board has agreed to a restricted, 10-year lease of 120 acres to Paul Bunyan Arboretum, Inc. This means that the arboretum group will proceed this spring in developing the area, which includes the site of the old county landfill.

60 years ago (1957)

The Warrior wrestling team surprised even coach Merv Jensen yesterday with a 33-16 win over Aitkin, dominating the lower weights. Winners by pin were Harlan Chisholm, Jim Pickar and Bob DeRosier. Winning by decision at 127 pounds was Jack Graham, his 5th straight win.

80 years ago (1937)

Police are distributing to all operators of hotels, restaurants and 3.2 beer parlors, application blanks for a city license. The license mandates a physical exam by a doctor for the owner and each employee of the establishments under terms of a new city ordinance.

100 years ago (1917)

The masquerade on ice at the Boom Lake municipal ice rink drew a crowd estimated at 500 last night. Many fine costumes were worn by the skaters.The ice was in fine shape and the recent snow had been removed.
