Fire destroyed the Quarterdeck Restaurant on Gull Lake yesterday morning. Firefighters found flames shooting out the roof of the building, part of which dates back to the 1940s. None of the resort cabins were damaged and there were no injuries.

County board chair Steve Sievek was puzzled. A motion to approve an engineering contract was made by Mary Koep, but no one would second it. After several attempts failed, Sievek made the second himself. When he called for a vote, it passed unanimously. So why would no one second it?

Unbeaten Eddie's Arrow, faced with a challenge from Nutting's Insurance in the Brainerd Slow Pitch Softball League, made it 13-in-a-row with a 20-8 win. Dave Maras pitched the complete game win with hitting support from George Marx, Carl Hendrickson and many others.

Brainerd drivers who use South 6th Street as a parking spot will learn the ins and outs of parallel parking as the switch from angle parking begins in two days. Though there will probably be some weird forms of parallel parking to begin with, police believe drivers will get the hang of it.

The greatest community dinner in the history of the county took place at Armstrong's grove at South Long Lake. Local baseball teams competed in the morning and thousands were present for the noon dinner. Dr. Marion Burton spoke on "The Meaning of America."
