The Central Lake College men's basketball team hasn't played a game yet, but they've already made a great assist. In a community service idea from first-year coach Jim Russell, the team took in the docks, boats and boat lifts at Confidence Learning Center on Sylvan Lake.

A brother of Jeff Siemon, linebacker for the Vikings, is one of two men charged with the robbery of Tutt's Minnow Service in Garrison last week. One of the men grabbed a pint of vodka from a liquor store and ran off, then they used a shotgun to hold up Tutt's and got $50.

With an army of red-coated deer hunters scattered through the woods on opening morning, the season appears to have a slow start. The first deer registered at the Log Cabin was a 128-pound doe shot by Mary Schubert. It was her first deer in three years of hunting.
80 years ago (1937)
Over 5,000 farmers and small jobbers in northern areas hurt by the timber workers' strike have petitioned the governor to settle the strike. The Deerwood Lumber Co. said their timber trucks have had no problem since sheriff's deputies started escorting them.
