(Photo) Water surges from the mouth of County Ditch 13, emptying water into North Long Lake. The 1.5 mile ditch, which carries water from Lake Edward, was once full of silt and algae. Now, after hours of work, tons of rock and $50,000, it's back in operation.

Sandy Smith of Brainerd has been named the WCHA college hockey player of the week. The sophomore right winger scored three goals and added two assists to help his Univ. of Minn.-Duluth Bulldogs sweep two games from Northern Michigan last weekend.
40 years ago (1977)
This story is a little late; it should have been printed on Halloween. Deer hunters found three graves with headstones, two with mounds of dirt and one open near Pillager. They are 100 yards from a house abandoned for 10 years. It may be a prank, but the sheriff is investigating.
60 years ago (1957)
Two area young men owe their lives to the decision by Roy Speed and Clair Cahill, both of Brainerd, to go duck hunting on the Mississippi. The young men, in a canoe, shot a deer on shore but then fell in deep water. Speed and Cahill were there just in time to rescue them.
80 years ago (1937)
The new Long Lake town hall will literally rise from the ashes of the one that burned down a year ago. Concrete for the foundation is poured on the exact site and the new building will be 26 X 42 with a basement. Materials will cost less than $2,000 and labor is furnished by the WPA.
100 years ago (1917)
The grand jury has completed its work and returned 22 indictments. Among them, four people have been charged with selling liquor without a license, a man and a woman each charged with adultery, and a man charged with assault in the second degree.
