The soccer ball appears to have rolled out of Brainerd and into Baxter. A school board committee searching sites for a varsity soccer field has received an offer of 6.8 acres from the city of Baxter. The land in Southdale Addition has room for a varsity field and practice fields.

Betty Alderman, one of the leaders in the effort to spruce up downtown Brainerd for Christmas, sounded like she'd been hit in the stomach by Scrooge. "I'm so disgusted," she said, while reporting that a car had driven through the fence just installed to protect the new ice skating rink.

The Brainerd girls' swim team finished third in the Section 3 Regional Meet. Qualifying for state were Dawn Clabo in the 50 and 100 free, Mary Meyers in the 100 back, Vicki Brown and Karen Campbell in diving and the 200 medley relay of Meyers, Clabo, Lisa Gohl and Monica Hanson.

Oscar Kristofferson defeated William DeVries 68 to 35 to be named trustee in the Baxter village election. He will succeed Harold Longnecker who did not run again. In a tight race for justice of the peace, Walt Bourassa defeated Dick Brunelle 52 to 46.

After a slow first quarter which saw the Warrior basketball team tied 5 to 5 with Pine River, Brainerd moved to a 17-9 lead at the half and pulled away to a 35-16 victory in their pre-season game. The game was slow and marked by much bodily contact and fouling.
100 years ago (1917)
George Anderson, first charged with running an unlicensed drinking establishment on Laurel Street, has now been charged with manslaughter in the case of John McGarry. A coroner's jury found the latter died from blows to the head after he was found unconscious on the floor.
