The Warrior wrestling team opened its season with a 44-24 conquest of St. Cloud Tech in a conference dual meet. Pins for Brainerd were by Josh Ostrowski at 103, David Heldt 119, Brian Kalinoski 125, Tim Rick 140 and Trevor McCullough heavyweight.

The Brainerd girls' basketball team suffered their first loss of the season to drop to 2-1. Alexandria overpowered the Warriors 50-29. Coach Jim Gogolin said "their quickness really bothered us, and they out-rebounded us by 36-18.

(Photo) A unit of Green Berets had planned to parachute into Camp Ripley to begin a two-week winter training exercise. High winds cancelled the jump for safety reasons. The C-130 airplane here makes a pass over the field but a red smoke canister is "popped," scrubbing the jump.

Herb Kretzmann, 15, is in the hospital with a broken wrist and elbow and a gash on his head. He's dazed and not quite sure how he got there. Herb was actually in the top of a tree gathering dead branches for a fire when his buddy (perhaps former buddy) cut the tree down with Herb in it.

(Photo) The snowy owl shown here will be presented to the Brainerd Elks Lodge by Frank Hall and Pete Cardle, local game wardens. The owl, a rarity in this area, was shot by Cardle while the two wardens were duck hunting near Lake Hubert.

Twenty-Five young men of the county have been notified to appear for physical exams for military service at the NP Hospital on Dec. 12. The list includes 11 from Brainerd, 6 from Crosby, 2 from Fort Ripley and one each from Dykeman and Manganese.
