If the weather doesn't change soon, Brainerd will be called the Miami of the North. That might appeal to some, but the lack of snow and ice is threatening events like the Breezy Point Ice Fest and the snowmobile races at BIR. Area resorts are losing money every day with cancellations.

Whatever happens next, Linda Eder's career is off and running through her record-setting participation in the CBS-TV "Star Search" program. Eder, the 1979 Miss Brainerd, is the first female vocalist to win 10 straight contests on the national program hosted by Ed McMahon.

Sen. Wendell Anderson has a "tennis elbow" injury caused from shaking so many hands as a politician. But it didn't hamper his hockey game when he played wing for the Twin Cities Oldtimers in a benefit game against the Brainerd All-Stars at the newly opened Brainerd Civic Center.
60 years ago (1957)
A fired-up C-I team gave unbeaten Brainerd all they could handle at the C-I gym, with Brainerd pulling out a 71-65 win. The Warriors, down by eight points late in the game, rode the shooting of its diminutive guards Jimmy Brown and Tony Mudford, whose combined 38 points sealed the win.

Until recently Baxter was the name of a township. Today it is assuming the proportions of a village. Four miles west of Brainerd, on Hwy 210, there now stands a group of 14 or 15 houses - eight built in the last year. They are grouped around the new schoolhouse, which enrolls 40 students.

Will the hopes of the Red Cross Christmas membership drive be realized, and will 1,500 be signed up before 9 p.m. on Christmas Eve? At 7:30 p.m. that night all church bells in the city will ring, and candles will be lit in the windows of every Red Cross home. At 9 p.m. a blast of shop whistles will signal success.
