Unstable weather creates unstable ice. That simple message was driven home when 14 ice fishermen were trapped on an ice floe that broke free on Mille Lacs Lake. Mille Lacs County deputies responded with their hovercraft and were able to rescue all the anglers.

Brainerd Improvement, Inc. presented a concept for a dramatic renovation of downtown to the city council. It would roof over Laurel Street from 6th to 8th, and over part of 7th. A combined city municipal building would be on Laurel, and a new Dispatch building where city hall now sits.

County Attorney Steve Rathke and defense attorney Jon Maturi completed their final arguments and Judge James Preece has placed the case of accused fire-bomber John Rieck in the hands of a nine-woman, three-man jury. The trial lasted six days.

Brainerd's fifth straight victory followed a familiar script, as the Warriors trailed in the first half, then roared back to thump Moorhead 75-58. Big John Emerson at center was limited to two field goals in the first half but recovered to lead all scorers with 23 points.

A Christmas robin, seeming not to mind the cold in the least, was reported in West Brainerd by Mrs. William Goldwater. The bird has been around the past two weeks and has become quite tame, coming to her door for the crumbs she sets out for it daily.

The state dairy and food commissioner and the county agricultural agent attended the meeting of farmers wishing to establish a creamery co-op. Over 100 farmers pledged thousands in capital money and pledged the cream of 900 cows.
