As the sun set on New Year's Day, a series of accidents tested emergency response units. Three snowmobilers ended up in the lake and two Brainerd firefighters did also when their rescue craft leaked and flipped. The sheriff called for people to stay off area lakes.
30 years ago (1988)
Law officers swept through the Crosby area in a major drug round-up that resulted in the arrest of eight people and the seizure of $16,000 in drugs. The arrests were the result of a six-month undercover investigation by Crosby Police and the county sheriff's office.
40 years ago (1978)
Brainerd's Golden Glove boxing team kept its winning string going, winning four of five bouts at Nashwauk. Jim Crawford earned "best boxer" honors with his win over Rick DeFoe of Duluth. Also winning were his brother Todd Crawford, Kyle Dean and Tod Storm.
60 years ago (1958)
(Photo) Roland Mills, Route 6, Brainerd, did what few summer or winter anglers have done for several years when he landed this 24-4 northern on a golden shiner minnow at Round Lake. Prize winning northerns have been a good deal smaller recently.
80 years ago (1938)
Pete Gallus, resident of unorganized territory about five miles north of Brainerd, boosted his total of wolf bounties this fall to 11 by bringing in five pelts to auditor F.M. Hamberg. He received $75 for the wolves, caught with snares in the northern part of the county.
100 years ago (1918)
The Dispatch has received a letter from the American Tobacco Co. regarding the tobacco kits we are sending to the boys at the front in France. The company said that 1,600 kits are on hand with the Red Cross and that they will all be distributed by Christmas.
