Linking Brainerd and Baxter is the thrust of a joint multi-use trail system connecting Brainerd's College Drive with the Paul Bunyan Trail as soon as 2001. The total project is $600,000, with MnDOT picking up half the $120,000 local match because of crossing Hwy 210.

Park Center, ranked fifth in Class AA, won the Brainerd Invitational gymnastics meet, edging ninth-ranked Brainerd 138.3 to 137.1. The Warriors' Julie Beasley served notice that she belongs among the top-ranked by winning the vault and uneven bars and finishing second all-around.

Howard (Jiggs) Blanck, 41, former publisher of the Crow Wing County Review, has joined the Dispatch as promotion director. He has many years experience in newspapers, much of it in circulation at papers in the Midwest. He is a city council member and active in Brainerd.

(Photo) Shown here is the recently installed telephone switchboard at St. Joseph's Hospital. It's the newest available dial switching equipment and cost $10,000. It can handle all calls coming into the hospital, calls made from patient rooms and long distance calls.

John Hanson, who was injured when a car he was pushing last week rolled backward, crushing him to the ground, is said to be improved at St. Joseph's Hospital. He will soon be moved to a St. Paul hospital where he will receive treatment for fractured vertebrae.
100 years ago (1918)
A shortage of hay is sending prices up to the top notches. Carl Wheeler, a farmer from Oak Lawn Twp. is receiving $18.75 per ton for wild hay delivered to the railroad in Brainerd. In two days Wheeler loaded three rail cars for shipment.
