A cagey home builder and quick police work put one man in jail and two under suspicion of theft yesterday. Mark Andrew found material from his building site gone and traced it to a nearby house. The residents left
but Andrew took license numbers of vehicles, which led police to an arrest.

The city council canceled its development agreement with BITC and also decided to seek a second extension on a $350,000 loan it guaranteed through 1st American Bank. Candidate for mayor Bob Olson charged city council members with negligence in their BITC dealings.

Mike Bialka, 23, has joined the newsroom staff at the Dispatch as a sports / general assignment reporter. Bialka comes from the Crookston Times. He is a graduate of Brainerd High School and St. Cloud State and was a pitcher for the baseball teams at both schools.

Tom Belisle, 18-year-old Brainerd golfer, didn't have time from work to defend his city men's title. But he entered the 26th Annual Pine Beach Tourney and won, shooting 8-under-par over 36 holes. Brainerd's Mary Jeanne Johnson, also 18, was runner-up on the women's side.

Fighting uphill battles against teams from larger towns, Nisswa won the Region 3 baseball tournament and advances to the state tournament in Shakopee next week. Nisswa edged Nymore 4-3 in a 12-inning thriller after a nerve tingling 4-3 win over Big Fork earlier.

Pvt. Wm. Gilbert, Jr., of South Long Lake, who left Brainerd all by himself last week bound for Camp Lewis, Wash., isn't alone anymore. He writes that there are 60,000 troops in the barracks and he expects to get uniform and rifle next week.
