When the city council was offered a chance to buy the Brainerd Skate Center for $1.00, they jumped at it. But the process to make what was once the Brainerd Theatre into a parking lot also entails $19,500 in back taxes, plus $40,000 to demolish the building and pave the site.

1st American Bank said they will require the city to make good on an overdue loan of $350,000 made to Trailer Systems 2000, part of BITC. The council had guaranteed the note by pledging city-owned CDs. The note, with extensions, was due yesterday; no payment was received.

The Warrior girls' swim team improved to 3-0 on the season with a 92-80 win over St. Cloud Apollo, winning eight events in the process. Brainerd was led by Dawn Clabo, who set a pool and team record of 25.4 in the 50 free. Monica Hanson won the 200 and 500 free events.

The arrest of two burglary suspects by Crow Wing County sheriff's officers may lead to the end of a two-year series of cabin break-ins in the Pelican Lake area. Officers were tipped by a metro sporting goods dealer who was offered a bargain on three outboard motors.

County records show that the draft registration of Sept. 12 included 3,509 men. Of them, 945 are aliens, with Finns numbering 304, Austrians 250, Swedes 98, Norwegians 42, Canadians and Greeks show 30 each, and 41 were from Montenegro.
