Amateur Baseball: Jendro's gem leads Sobieski
BELLE PLAINE - Tyler Jendro threw a complete-game 2-hitter, with 12 strikeouts and only one walk, to help the Sobieski Skis beat the Hanska Lakers 2-0 in the Class C state tournament Sunday night.
The Skis and Lakers waited out a rain delay for more than an hour to start the game with the first pitch finally delivered at 7:50 p.m.
Jendro retired the first eight men he faced before giving up a 2-out single in the third to Mikale Gustafson. Jendro then retired 11 straight batters until Eric Portner lined an infield single off Jendro's glove with one out in the seventh.
None of the three Hanska baserunners advanced past first base.
Sobieski improved to 19-5 and Region 8's No. 4 seed will now face the Maple Lake Lakers, champions of Region 12, at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Jordan.
Jon Czech went 2-for-3 with a double, sacrifice and RBI to lead the Skis at the plate. Nate Olson walked twice, had a sacrifice and a stolen base and drove in a run.
Sobieski scored in the fifth as Josh Wenzel led off with a single and stole second. Isaac Smieja's bunt sacrificed Wenzel to third. Olson then executed a perfectly placed squeeze bunt and Wenzel raced home for a 1-0 lead.
The Skis added a run in the eighth. Joey Hanowski drilled a leadoff single and stole second. He scored on Jon Czech's single to center.
Maple Lake won the Class C title two years ago and during its title run beat Sobieski 3-1 in the quarterfinals at St. Cloud.
