Baseball: Baxter to host Ripken Midwest Plains Regional
The City of Baxter and the Baxter Area Baseball Association will host the 12-U Cal Ripken Midwest Plains Region Tournament July 24-29.
Teams from Minnesota (2 teams), Missouri (2 teams), Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska and Colorado will play for a chance to advance to the Cal Ripken Little League World Series. Baxter will play its first game at 6:30 p.m. Friday against the Nebraska state champion.
Teams will begin checking in Thursday. A picnic for players and families will be at 6 p.m. Thursday. A skills competition will follow the meal. These events will take place at Oscar Kristofferson Park in Baxter under the pavilions and on the adjacent baseball fields.
At 8 a.m. Friday, coaches, managers and tournament officials will meet for breakfast and a tournament briefing at Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Baxter.
The first game will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday between Kansas and Colorado.
Opening ceremonies are scheduled at 6 p.m. Friday and will feature introduction of teams with their state flags. The national anthem will be played by Danny Olson from the local band Solo.
Championship game is scheduled for 11 a.m. July 29. A second game, if necessary, would follow at 1:30 p.m.
