A big step forward
Although I don't always agree with Mary Koep, I'm writing to thank her for being the driving force behind the Ceremony of Reconciliation on Wednesday, June 18. There was a big write-up on the ceremony in Thursday's Brainerd Dispatch, so I won't repeat all the details. Suffice it to say, Native American veterans, musicians and dignitaries from White Earth, Mille Lacs and Leech Lake were there along with Caucasian clergy and dignitaries, and a small audience. The drawing for a plaque was unveiled which will stand by the jail, forever commemorating this event where Caucasians from Brainerd apologized for the lynching of two young Native Americans during the blueberry harvest. Telling the truth about events such as this is a big step forward in repairing the misunderstandings and injustices of the past.
