Class 1A State Golf: Pettit primed for another solid round

Jenna Pettit has improved from last year and Saul Sasse improved mid-round.

Pettit shot nines of 49-45 Tuesday for her first round 94, which has her sitting tied for 24th after the first round of the Class 1A state tournament at Pebble Creek in Becker.

The Pillager senior is 15 shots off the lead, which is held by Christine Piwnica of Southwest Christian and Lauren Laffen of Sleepy eye at 79.

"She played really well," said Pillager head coach Chris Berent. "She had one bad hole on the front nine where it got away from her a little bit. She recovered nicely and had a good round."

Last year, Pettit opened with a first round 102 and followed it with a 107 for a two-day 209 that tied her for 52nd.

"I think she just needs to maintain what she's doing," Berent said. "She played really well. It was one bad hole and a couple of miscues with her short game. She'll collect herself tonight and come back and hopefully play even better Wednesday."

Sasse opened with a first nine 45, but came back with a 40 on the back nine to shoot 85, which has him tied for 30th in his first state tournament. Sasse is only 10 shots off the lead, which Mahnomen's Nathaniel Kahlbaugh owns.
