Class 1A State Golf: Sasse seeks consistency

Saul Sasse said he needs to hit the ball more consistent.

The Pine River-Backus senior couldn't have scored more consistently.

Sasse hit back-to-back 85s for a two-day 170 tying him for 31st place in the Class 1A state tournament at Pebble Creek in Becker.

The state tournament rookie started well on the first four holes Wednesday, but struggled on holes 5 through 9.

"He played pretty well and started out absolutely perfect for the first three or four holes," said PR-B head coach Steve Heslop. "Then things started to slip. He ran into a tough par 5 fifth hole and kind of got behind the eight ball. He went double bogey, bogey, double and it just ate into his score. He came around for the second nine and got it back and started being more consistent again."

The senior's nine-hole scores were the same on both days as he opened with a 45 and carded 40 on the back nine.

"I just need to work on hitting the ball more consistently," said Sasse. "Some holes, like the first four, I was sitting perfect. Then I started hitting it everywhere. I was 8-over on the last five holes of the front nine. I just need to be more consistent and breaking 80 will be easy."

Breaking 80 was Sasse's goal, but a two-club wind and a difficult course set up hampered his strength, which is length off the tee.

"I had to be a lot more conservative than I wanted," said Sasse "I hit a lot of irons off the tee. There were some holes I could take out the driver and rip it, but there were holes where I hit 4-iron and 6-iron because there were bunkers out there at 280. I couldn't hit driver as much as I wanted. It was a really difficult golf course off the tee box."

Pillager's Jenna Pettit followed up her first round 94 with a 101 Wednesday. That gave her a 195, which tied her for 40th.

Pettit bettered her opening nine from Tuesday by shooting a 47, but struggled down the stretch with a 54 on the back.

"She struggled a little bit around the greens," said Pillager head coach Chris Berent. "She worked really hard today to get the score she did. It was a scrambling type day. She wasn't able to get things going.

"It was a great experience and I'm proud of her."

Pettit improved 12 places from last year's state tournament and her 195 is 14 strokes better than she shot as a junior at Pebble Creek.
