Class 3A State Golf: Stoxen stinging after round one

Class 3A Golf

Who: Brainerd's Thomas Stoxen tied for 49th

Where: Bunker Hills Golf Course, Coon Rapids

Next: Final round of Class 3A state golf at Bunker Hills, Coon Rapids Noon Wednesday

He's frustrated and disappointed, but Thomas Stoxen is not done.

Stoxen fired nines of 40-40 to shoot a first-round 80 in the Class 3A state tournament Tuesday at Bunker Hills in Coon Rapids.

The Brainerd Warriors senior isn't accustomed to shooting in the 80s during warmer weather. He fired his usual rounds of 76-72 in the Section 8-3A tournament so with an 80 on the card, Stoxen is looking to go low in Wednesday's final round

"I'm not angry," said Stoxen. "It's golf and I know that. I'll just try to respond and play my best tomorrow. I'll stick with my game plan. Today, my intent was to attack and I just wasn't feeling anything. Tomorrow hopefully will be different."

Stoxen started well with two pars and a birdie, but then hit a wall with slow play in front of him. He also couldn't will a putt to drop.

"He missed some greens that probably should have been hit and his putting was probably the biggest issue," said Warriors head coach Brian Wallace. "He had three three putts on the front side. It's hard to shoot close to par when you're doing that."

Stoxen saw countless putts lip out or just ride the edge. Wallace said he had numerous putts down the stretch that wouldn't fall.

"I'll probably spend a little more time with the putter during warm ups and hopefully find something that will help,' said Stoxen. "Mostly I just need to stick with what I know and normally do."

Said his coach: "You have to go out there and hold your chin up. He needs to go out and do what he does. He'll be just fine if he can play his game and show people what he's capable of."
