Thomas Stoxen was tired of it.

After shooting an opening round 80 and then starting the final round with three straight bogeys, the Brainerd Warriors senior had enough.

Stoxen turned things around and shot 75 Wednesday at Bunker Hills Golf Club to finish with a two-day 155 in the Class 3A state tournament. He tied for 33rd place in his first state meet.

"I was not hitting the ball very well," said Stoxen. "Then I came around the fourth hole and I was tired of it. I just started to play a little better. I just beared down.

"I just got tired of it. I haven't started that bad for awhile. I just needed to get back to my game and focus a lot more on my shots. My putting turned around a little bit, too."

Stoxen pulled his opening drive into a bunker and couldn't get up and down for his first bogey. On Hole 2, he hit into the trees and then on the third hole he three putted. Unlike Tuesday when he three-putted four greens, that was Stoxen's only three putt of the round.

"He did a really nice job of being aggressive after that and turning it around," said Brainerd head coach Brian Wallace. "He birdied the next hole and wound up 3-over for the front.

Stoxen finished even par on the back nine to improve by five shots over his first round. He finished 13 strokes off the lead.

The future St. Thomas University player said the one thing he learned is that he can play with anybody if he plays his game. He said he gained confidence moving forward in his career.

"It's just a testament to where he is mentally right now," said Wallace. "Even just a year ago, he could have really gone south with that score after starting with three bogeys. He didn't. He kept his calm. The difference is he knows he can come back from adversity and he did. He made a sand save on No. 8 on the front. He made a tough par putt on 9 after getting into trouble off the tee. His confidence level came back after that and he was steady the rest of the day."
