Al Doty of Royalton liked what he saw in recently concluded legislative session. So much so that he’d like to return the Minnesota House. He filed Tuesday after being endorsed Monday night by DFLers for the House District 9B seat now held by Rep. Ron Kresha, R-Little Falls.

Doty, who served two terms in the House (elected in 2006 and 2008), said that before the DFL had majorities in both houses, he watched the government shutdown, borrowing from schools and from tobacco payments to balance the budget. He said having the DFL as the majority party is the right way to go.

He has stepped down from his nonpartisan post on U.S. Rep. Rick Nolan’s staff in order to run for the Legislature. Before he was a lawmaker he served as a senior advocate and a teacher-coach at Pierz High School.

He said he wants to move rural Minnesota forward in such areas as education, jobs, health care and quality of life. In his acceptance speech at the convention in Browerville, he said Minnesota’s economy is returning to pre-recession levels thanks to the DFL-led majorities.

“Under this last session property taxes will decrease, our schools were paid back, all-day kindergarten was funded and rural broadband received support,” he said in his speech.

Doty, 68, said he had to refrain from campaigning in his previous job. He had indicated to friends that “if the situation stayed like it was I would file on the last day.”

He said it would not be accurate to question his resolve for the job because of his late entry into the race.

“I definitely do want the job,” he said. “I did a good job when I was there.”

While in the Legislature, Doty said he served on committees that dealt with veterans, the environment and transportation.
