Drunken driving suspect pretended not to speak English, police say
MOORHEAD – A Fargo man faces a drunken driving charge after pretending not to speak English when pulled over by an officer in Moorhead, police say.
Adam Neil Dominguez, 34, was charged Monday in Clay County District Court with driving while intoxicated and refusing a breath test, both felonies.
Court documents say the officer pulled over Dominguez on Saturday evening for going 62 mph in a 55-mph zone.
Dominguez smelled of alcohol, showed signs of intoxication and wouldn’t acknowledge directions from the officer, court documents say, and an open bottle of apple-flavored vodka was splashed around inside the car.
Police say Dominguez told an officer that he “No habla,” but when the Spanish-speaking officer asked him his name, in Spanish, Dominguez didn’t identify himself.
At the jail, Dominguez admitted he speaks English, court records say. He became angry and belligerent, refused to take a breath test and cursed at the officer in English, calling him by a gay slur, police allege.
Dominguez was found to have prior DWI convictions in 2001, 2002, 2003 and a first-degree DWI in 2004.
His next court appearance is set for June 13.
