Ely man killed in boating accident, 2 men injured

ELY - An Ely man was killed Friday in a boating accident on Lake Shagawa near Ely in northeastern Minnesota.

The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office said dispatchers got a call reporting the crash at 5:30 a.m. Saturday. Two men who had survived the crash said they were in the boat Friday evening when it struck a rock near an island at high speed and all three were ejected from the boat and onto the island.

A passenger, Brice Dale Bundy, 23, of Ely, died at the scene from his injuries. The boat’s pilot, Nicholas Earl White, 27, of Babbitt, and passenger Matthew Grant Christopherson, 23, of Laporte, suffered injuries that were not life-threatening, the sheriff’s office said.

They called from the island, and the St. Louis County Rescue Squad rescued the men.

The sheriff’s office is continuing to investigate.
