Girls Tennis: Mimmack-Fitterer, Warriors win titles
Brainerd's No. 1 doubles team of Brooke Mimmack-Ashley Fitterer won a championship and the Warriors captured the team title in the Brainerd/Camp Lake Hubert Invite on Monday in the first meet played on the newly resurfaced Brainerd High School courts.
Mimmack-Fitterer, who improved to 6-0, opened with a 6-0, 3-6, (8-6) win over Juliet Tineberg-Shawna Spears of Thief River Falls. Then they defeated Liz Rubbelke-Emily Spaniol of Rogers 6-3, 6-3. They finished with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Greta Kolstad-Callie Maustan of Virginia.
Brainerd's Payge Fitterer went 2-1 at No. 3 singles. The No. 2 doubles of Hannah Moen-Kennedy Rusk and the No. 3 team of Jenna Swenson-Megan Wroolie also went 2-1.
The Warriors opened with a 4-3 win over TRF, then lost to Rogers 4-3 before beating Virginia 5-2.
"It was great to be able to compete on our new facility," Warriors coach Lisa Salo said. "The three matches we had were very competitive, great competitive tennis.
"We were a little slow to start the first match because the girls were acclimating to the new court surface. They were excited being in the new facility. They eased into the competition and did very well working through that."
The Warriors played 12 tiebreakers in the round-robin tournament.
"That shows we were competitive," Salo said. "Tiebreakers are pressure situations. It was great experience for us to have competitive matches this early in the season. The girls were looking forward to it and it turned out to be a good competitive day for us."
