Mayor proclaims Monday 'Private Walter B. Straka Day'
Brainerd Mayor James Wallin proclaims Monday, June 16, 2014 as Private Walter B. Straka Day in the city of Brainerd. Straka is a survivor of the Bataan Death March.
He was taken prisoner of war on April 9, 1942 and survived a death march, POW Camp, malaria, and nearly one month on the Clyde Maru Ship before being Liberated on Sept. 13, 1945.
He is the last surviving National Guard member of A Company.
Wallin encourages all residents of Brainerd to remember the day in history and those lost, and to preserve Brainerd's history.
