BARROWS — The brother-sister tandem of Ashley and Brandon Mehrwerth made a front-row start together Saturday in the Midwest Modified feature event on Kids Night at North Central Speedway.

Ashley Mehrwerth jumped out to a quick lead and built the gap between the rest of the field when a caution flag came out midway through the 15-lap feature event.

The restart opportunity allowed Randy Laage and Shane Sabraski to surge in front of Mehrwerth. Laage won followed by Sabraski and Danny Vang. Ashley Mehrwerth still managed a top five finish, which has been routine for her this season.

During intermission of Kids Night drivers pull on to the track and kids can get autographs from their favorite drivers.

Four years ago, when Ashley Mehrwerth was driving a hornet car, the lines were long to get her autograph.

The line Saturday was longer — proof that interest from the racing community is growing.

Now in her sophomore season of Midwest Modified, Mehrwerth is still adjusting to the nuances of her ride, but her results are improving. Two weeks ago she ran out front for the feature before finishing behind Sabraski and Dennis Czech, two veteran drivers with championships under their belt.

“It’s tough moving from a front wheel drive to a rear wheel drive, but it is so worth it,” Mehrwerth said. “The competition is obviously stiffer and that is what makes it fun because it is more of a challenge.”

Mehrwerth purchased Sabraski’s B-Mod racing car to race this season

“I think that I am,” she Mehrwerth, when asked if she is more confident. “It is fun running with the best drivers and once you finish behind them you know it is a confidence booster. I am thinking that I can get a win. I just need to keep pushing.”

After a successful hornet car career, Mehrwerth looked for another ride and found her cousin’s B-Mod.

“We were looking around, but weren’t sure what we wanted to move into,” she said.” My cousin, Justin Jones, raced B-Mod, but then moved to A-Mod and he had a car. It was more of a convenience thing and was our only option.”

After driving in Jones’ car last year, she made the move to get Sabraski’s old ride for this year. She is also learning how to drive a car with more horse power. One thing she is paying more attention to is her tires.

“I think that is very important,” said Mehrwerth. “It’s kind of like new shoes. You have to make sure they are brand new for traction. You also have to make sure you have the right tire pressure. Everything matters.”

Ashley is not the lone female driver at the track. The field continues to grow with female drivers now in a number of classes.

“I think it is great to see all the women out here,” Mehrwerth said. “I think it shows that our sport is growing, which is great to see. It’s always great to have more.”
