Picture perfect

Email

On Dec. 7, Harlan Holmvig brought to the attention of the Brainerd Dispatch and its readers his desire to return photos of a 3-year-old girl named Allison. He had found three photos, along with $100 cash, in a gold picture frame that he suspected his wife Molly had purchased at a garage sale.

Maybe it was the holiday magic in the air or the spirit of Christmas; whatever it was, Holmvig’s wish came true, reuniting the owners with their photos and meeting, for the first time, the little girl that tugged at his heart.

“I am on cloud nine,” said Holmvig after hearing that the owners of the photos were found. “I just knew that someone wanted these back and I am so eager to meet them.”

No longer a small child but framed with the same blonde curls and smile, Allison is now a 15-year-old freshman at Red River High School in Grand Forks, N.D. Her parents, Dan and Janelle Mulroy, graduated from Brainerd in 1988 and both of their parents still live in the area.

Coming back to the area to visit Janelle’s parents, Ray and Charlene Sipper of Nisswa for the holidays proved to be the perfect time to meet.

On Dec. 22, the Mulroy’s visited Holmvig’s home in Crosby to retrieve not only their pictures, but some stories, too.

“We were blessed to visit with Mr. Holmvig over the holiday weekend and retrieved the photos,” said Janelle in an email. “Our visit was very nice, Mr. Holmvig is truly a wonderful man. He shared his story of finding the photos as well as other stories about his life.”

Mulroy noted they didn’t accept the money because she didn’t believe it was theirs.

“It was a wonderful visit,” said Holmvig. “It made for the perfect addition to the holidays.”
