Russell leads freshmen to victory
Michael Russell's bat and Bryce Flanagan's arm helped Brainerd's freshmen team defeat Aitkin 5-1 Wednesday at Mills Field.
Russell drove in two runs on two hits. Flanagan pitched six strong innings, allowing one earned run, striking out four and stranding 10 baserunners.
In one inning on the mound, Russell gave up just one hit, allowed no earned runs, walked none and struck out one.
Aitkin won Game Two 14-3.
Cody Shepherd reached base twice for Brainerd. He scored one run and had one RBI as he doubled in the first inning.
Josh Jarmuzek was charged with the loss. He allowed nine runs in one-third of an inning, walked one and struck out none.
"We played well enough to win the first game, but I'd like to see more quality at bats," Brainerd coach Nick Nelson said. "I thought we did a great job of limiting runs on the mound, but we need to throw fewer pitches outside of the zone.
"In the second game, we had too many errors, gave up too many hits, and dug ourselves a hole early. We responded, and put together seven hits, but it just wasn't enough today."
