SEMI-PRO FOOTBALL: Lumberjacks to play bowl game at Aitkin
The Lumberjacks are back.
Returning for the first time since their loss to the Minnesota Sting in the Midwest Premier Football League (MPFL) championship game in August, the Brainerd semi-pro team will take the field against the Twin City Silverbacks at Aitkin High School on Oct. 13 in the Mojo Hydrate Elite Bowl.
The Silverbacks are a non-MPFL and will be matching up with Brainerd for the first time.
Ra Ra Jones, Titus Cole, Wade Steier and other popular Lumberjacks will be playing as most of the roster from the 2012 season will be retained, along with 10-15 newcomers.
“We’re excited to use this game to build for next year,” Lumberjacks coach J.J. Kern said.
According to Kern, former Minnesota Vikings players are scheduled to attend for a pig roast fundraiser on game day, including former star running back Chuck Foreman.
“We’d like to thank everybody who supported us and came to games, it was our most productive year as a business and a league,” Kern said.
The 2013 MPFL season will begin in May and will charter four more teams, bringing the total to 12 teams in the league.
