Semipro Football: Lumberjacks stifle Rhinos for win
Brainerd rushed for two and passed for another touchdown in Saturday’s 18-3 victory over Twin City Rhinos in the Lumberjacks’ Midwest Premier Football League home opener in Brainerd.
The Lumberjacks improved to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the West Division as Rochenel Jean-Baptiste rushed for a 25-yard touchdown and TJ Dean scored on a 5-yard run for a 12-0 halftime lead.
On the opening play of the second half, Marc Hummel hit Jeff Niemi on for a 70-yard touchdown pass to give Brainerd its 18 points.
“Our offensive line was dominating Saturday,” said Lumberjacks head coach J.J. Kern. “We have multiple running backs and that’s really nice. TJ rushed for more than 100 yards and James Lenoir surpassed 60 yards rushing.
“We did it passing and running both so we’re getting better and we’re having a little more balance as well.”
The Rhinos scored on a fourth quarter field goal.
“Our defense played really well,” said Kern. “We have good depth this year. We had eight to 10 guys, who probably would start on any giving day, that weren’t there. I really learned a lot about some new guys, who can really play.”
Brainerd will battle the St. Cloud Renegades 2 p.m. Saturday, May 18 at St. John’s University in Collegeville.
