Elk River scored two runs in the first inning to pull ahead and hold the lead in a 3-1 tournament win over the Brainerd VFW freshman team during the first round of pool play Friday in the Gopher State 15-and-under Tournament of Champions at Don Adamson Field in Brainerd.

Will Peabody pitched the loss for Brainerd with two walks and no strikeouts.

"Our team played a little too tight today," said Brainerd freshmen coach Nick Nelson. "We managed to get runners on, and produced seven hits, but just didn't knock them in. Those missed opportunities combined with errors on defense made it hard to win the ballgame. If we get back to playing confident, solid baseball in both halves of the inning, we'll do well."

Brainerd will face Burnsville for the second round of pool play in the Gopher State Tournament of Champions at Central Lakes College12:30 p.m. Saturday.
