VFW Baseball: Brainerd barely gets by Pierz twice

PIERZ — A pitching gem and extra innings were what the Brainerd sophomore VFW team needed to complete a 2-1, 5-3 sweep of Pierz.

Hanson Devine struck out 11, walked four and scattered three hits over 6.2 innings for a 2-1 Game One victory.

Jake Meyer went 3-4 at the plate and Jaden Miller and Colton Borg registered RBIs for Brainerd. Chris Pederson hit a double and scored a run on Miller's sacrifice fly.

Pierz's Matt Kummet suffered the loss despite allowing just one run. He walked four and struck out three.

In Game Two, Miller's triple in the ninth inning scored Meyer and Luke West to break a 3-3 tie and lead Brainerd to the win.

Miller finished 2-4 with a run, walk and the two RBIs. West was 2-4 with two doubles and two runs.

Dakota Guderjohn also had two hits, including a double, and recorded the victory with two innings of relief.

West started for Brainerd and allowed three runs, one earned, on four hits and three walks. He struck out three.

Pierz's Noah Boser was tagged with the loss. He allowed the two game-winning runs in his one inning of work.
