Entries only a few blocks apart in south Brainerd were winners in the 7th Annual Brainerd-Baxter Lighting Contest. The Holiday Inn on South 6th Street took top honors in the commercial division, while R.L. Shatka of Graydon Ave. won the residential honors.


30 years ago (1983)

A Merrifield man who said it was “time to leave” leaped from his pickup truck seconds before it crashed through the ice on North Long Lake. Frank Burgstaler said “it took me two years to rebuild that truck, and two minutes to put it in 35 feet of water.”

Brainerd will face another test on its airline service in early 1954. Its temporary certificate expires on March 27. Hearings on continuing service will take place in Washington, DC in January. Both passenger boardings and airmail are up.

80 years ago (1933)

A payroll of nearly $14,000 this week and the possibility of it going to $16,000 next week under government emergency projects today stimulated Christmas business. Paychecks went to 900 people in the county with the possibility of increasing to 1,000.

100 years ago (1913)

City Council President Lagerquist and Police Chief Quinn have ordered all walks cleared of obstructions. Members of the force are notifying owners and renters to remove boxes, beer kegs, ice cream tanks, hotel carts, advertising signs and all other items.
