20 years ago (1994)

Larry Clifford Berg of Brainerd, who portrayed Santa annually for more than 50 years, died at St. Joseph’s Medical Center. Berg, 89, dressed up as Santa for numerous holiday celebrations, but was remembered by friends as living the Christmas spirit year-round.


30 years ago (1984)

60 years ago (1954)

Despite a prodigious 30-point scoring effort by Ron (Gup) Hess, and double figure scoring by Jim DeRosier and Bob Waxlax, the Brainerd Junior College Red Raiders went down to defeat 92-67 against Gogebic. It was Brainerd’s ninth straight conference loss.

80 years ago (1934)

Attaches of the federal relief office are busy preparing for the distribution of 1,260 pounds of government beef to the needy. Families in need who receive cards from the court house can pick up the beef Thursday. A shipment of pork will come soon.

100 years ago (1914)

The Brainerd high school basketball team defeated Duluth Central by a score of 32 to 20. The high school orchestra played several selections. After the game an oyster stew supper was served to victors and vanquished alike. Brainerd also defeated Crosby recently.
