Why does the Brainerd-Crow Wing County Airport need a new runway? Because the FAA says the nearby landfill attracts birds, an aviation hazard. The local share to build a new runway would be $2 to 3 million. Cost to relocate the landfill is much higher.

(Photo) Largest walleye weighed in at Marv Koep's Nisswa Bait this season or last is this 12-11 specimen caught by Lyle Kline of Nisswa. He used a Lindy Rig and leech combination in 35-40 feet of water and was using 8-pound test line.

(Photo) Mother loon is shown here with her two babies on Roy Lake as she passes close to shore. The loons are usually timid birds unless their young are threatened. Most only hatch one offspring each year, but this year Roy Lake's loon has twins.

Union electricians employed by Werner Electric and Burton's Inc. are out on strike after the Duluth local they belong to rejected a five-cent-an-hour wage increase. The proposed raise to $2.47 on hour on small jobs is the same wage accepted by plumbers. Wages of $3.00 per hour on large jobs stay the same.

One of the wildly exciting things planned in northern Minnesota will be a race between the train carrying Brainerd merchants and clerks to their picnic in Walker and a motor boat. The tracks run next to Leech Lake for several miles, allowing the race.
