It was storybook stuff. After an absence of 61 years, professional baseball was back inBrainerd. A total of 2,654 fans packed Mills Field for the opening night of the Bears season. They beat the Minneapolis Loons 5-1 despite a brief power outage.

(Photo) A Pile of twisted metal marked the site of a head-on collision of two 110-car coal trains east of Motley. The 1:00 a.m. crash of the BN Railroad trains left one dead and two missing. Five men survived the fiery crash. Officials puzzled as to how two trains were on the same track.
40 years ago (1974)
(Photo) This 6-7 German brown trout was caught on a shiner minnow at 5th Crow Wing Lake near Nevis by Darrow Harrison of Ft. Ripley. The trout, measuring 27 inches long, is reported to be the biggest caught there in man years.

Joe Leslie Bush, first string pitcher of the Philadelphia Athletics and winner of a World Series game last year, is in Brainerd today. He had his pitching hand spiked in a game and is off a few days. He left the team at Chicago and will rejoin them at St. Louis.
