(1994) One possible candidate for David Letterman’s “Stupid Pet Tricks” is Gordie, a golden retriever-black lab mix who lives with Greg and Peggy Peltier of Brainerd. Gordie likes to climb trees. Yesterday he got stuck 30-feet up a tree and it took an end-loader to get him down.

30 years ago (1984)

Faced with the possible loss of $125,000, an angry group of exhibitors and fewer than expected fishermen has made Tim Manion unhappy, to say the least. He is the main promoter of the World Championship Walleye Tournament on Mille Lacs which was beset by troubles.

40 years ago (1974)

Everett Anderson, 53, owner of Anderson Dry Cleaners in Brainerd, died at St. Joseph’s Hospital. He had been in the dry-cleaning business since 1941. He was active in the Elks as trustee, past exalted ruler and past state president, and involved in many local groups.

60 years ago (1954)

Payday came one day late to Brainerd’s city employees this week. Checks were held up until today while city officials made arrangements with the Water & Light Board for extra funds. The city receives $3,500 a month from the board and needed it a few days early.

80 years ago (1934)

Formal opening of the Pine Beach Golf Club for the summer season will be held Sunday, said Jack Madden, operator. More than 20 officials of other nearby golf clubs have been invited to attend. C.D. Start, original course developer, will drive out the first ball.

100 years ago (1914)

A pot gang has been making its headquarters within the city limits, north of the railroad bridge on the east bank of the river. Entirely undisturbed, they are cooking their meals, hanging out their washing and having their beer parties. In day time there are eight or nine there.
