Brainerd's Lauren Nickisch is among 10 finalists in the 1994 Minnesota Teacher of the Year competition. The Baxter Elementary music teacher survived the cut from 27 semi-finalists. Each finalist will have a 30-minute interview with the Teacher of the Year judging committee.

Three masked men, armed with pistols and a machete, fled from Len Watland's home early this morning after holding him and his family hostage 45 minutes. They took a large amount of cash and more weapons. Watland attacked two of the burglars. They shot at him but missed.

(Photo) Doug Graen and Jack Tyrholm smile like champions as they show off the 8-pound German Brown trout that Graen caught in Stony Brook at 6:30 p.m. on worm bait. It is the largest trout caught here in years, if not an all-time local record.

A transient from Ottuma, Iowa was in the city jail today serving a 20-day sentence for petty larceny. He was observed stealing a camera from a local drug store and arrested by Deputy Sheriff Titus. He couldn't pay a $20 fine, so got 20 days.

For some three weeks a Twin Cities detective, Mr. H.K. Jones, has been in Brainerd working on the city hall robbery where the city clerk was beaten and robbed. He also investigates the Rappel murder case. His presence has not been mentioned by the Dispatch to give him time for detecting.
