Welcome to the Brainerd lakes area

Email

This is the weekend the Brainerd lakes area is in the spotlight as Minnesota’s favorite playground. Serving as the site of the Minnesota 2014 Governor’s Fishing Opener means that media outlets from far and wide will focus their attention on the area lakes and other recreational attractions we get to enjoy year-round.

Despite the fact the fishing opener usually falls close to the busiest and most hectic days of the legislative session, Minnesota governors traditionally stop everything and travel to the designated location for the opener.

Gull Lake is ground zero for the fishing world this weekend. That’s where Gov. Mark Dayton and his party will be guided by fishing guide Ray Gildow and wet their lines for the first time this season. The governor won’t be alone on Gull Lake. Most of the other lakes in the Brainerd lakes area will also be busy with determined anglers. Many Minnesotans regard the fishing opener as a time to open their cabins or make an early season visit to a favorite lake.

As important as fishing is to Minnesota’s tourism industry, it’s not the only attraction in the area. Many visitors will explore the Brainerd area’s biking trails, golf courses and fine restaurants. This year, Friday’s community picnic and the Gear Daddies Reunion Concert in downtown Nisswa will also be featured attractions.

Everyone loves to get away and the Brainerd area is blessed with the lakes, rivers and trails, as well as friendly communities that are perfect for a long weekend or a week-long vacation stay.
