The sound of music in the park
The sounds of music will again be heard this summer at Gregory Park on the north side of Brainerd.
The Lakes Area Senior Activity Center is bringing back bandstand performances every Thursday this summer beginning at 7 p.m. June 9 with Diane Saumer and Friends. Participants may bring their lawn chairs, blanket or sit on the park bench to enjoy the open air concert. Pending rainy weather, the concerts would be moved to the senior center, 803 Kingwood Street.
Diane Saumer and Friends has 62 years of performing experience and is known as the “Queen of Jazz.” Performing with Diane are Dick Wilt, Jim Olsen and Tom Rohr on guitar; Lyle Kline and Ted Alvard, drums; Dawn Hill and Al Olson, piano; Pat Scrimshaw, jazz harmonica; and Bob Guidi, tenor sax.
Upcoming concerts in the series include the Trinity Gospel Singers on June 16 and the Vagabonds on June 23. The “Banjo Man” Mike Turner finishes out the June performances June 30. Turner returns with his array of musical instruments, including the banjo, fiddle, autoharp, steel guitar, acoustic and flat-top guitar. He will perform his own songs along with other favorites, mixing in wit and humor.
The concerts in the bandstand at Gregory Park will continue throughout the summer. Performances are sponsored by the senior center that coordinated fundraising efforts to complete renovations to the bandstand in 2010.
