Art Focus: Symphonic Band.

Adviser nomination: “Jocelyn is principle bassoon in Symphonic Band and plays alto saxophone in the Brainerd High School (BHS) Jazz Ensemble I. She is a multifaceted performer and a valued leader in band.”

Why the bassoon: “I didn’t play it at first. I’ve played the alto saxophone since sixth grade. At the end of my sophomore year, I tried out with alto saxophone for Symphonic Band and I didn’t make it. (Chris) Fogderud told me he wanted me to learn how to play the bassoon and I wanted to go on tour with the band so I did it.”

What did you think of the bassoon: “It was weird at first playing it because it has the double reed, but I caught on fast. The fingering is about the same. The bass clef was the hardest thing to learn ... Now I absolutely love the bassoon.”

Do you plan to continue to play after high school: “Yes. I plan to go to college in Mankato and I plan to minor in music education. My major in undecided. I’d like to play both instruments in college.

“I’ll have my AA (Associates of Arts) degree before my high school degree because I took college courses through the PSEO (Post-Secondary Enrollment Options.)”

Most memorable fine arts achievement: Received a superior rating in the solo and ensemble contest for Jazz Band.

Artist most admired: Johan de Meij and he wrote “‘At Kitty O’Shea’s,’ my favorite piece we’ve played in band.”

Favorite TV show: “Friends.”

Best movie: “The Bucket List.”

Favorite song: “Somebody That I Used to Know.”

Summer plans: “I’m going on a summer tour with my brother for BMX racing, like I have for the past 13 years. The tour is throughout the U.S. and is all summer long. I started out racing and now I race and coordinate the clinics. My brother is a professional racer, Brandon Brown, he is a 2005 Brainerd High School alumni.

“BMX racing has been my life. I grew up doing it. It’s a family thing. It’s fun to race the guys and beat them, knowing that they got beat by a girl.”

Prom highlights: “Dinner and getting ready. I know a girl at the college who does hair so she did my hair and some friends ready, it was fun. We went to eat dinner at Sunshine Kitchen and Moonshine Lounge.”

Parents: Kevin Brown of Brainerd.

Honorable mention: Katie Fleischhacker, senior, art: “Katie is a diligent art student who works hard to meet project criteria in a timely fashion. She will persevere through frustration, explore and experiment with media and redesign her plan in an effort to achieve quality and satisfy her own high standards. Katie has a beautiful smile and a gentle personality that enhances any classroom.”
