■ Heartland Poets to meet

Heartland Poets will meet from 6-9 p.m. Friday in the large room of the Brainerd Public Library. Participants are asked to bring a poem in progress and copies to share with others.

■ Author to sign book Saturday

Candace Simar, author of the Abercrombie Trail series novels will sign books from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at The Center. Simar’s latest book, “Blooming Prairie,” is the fourth and final novel in the historical fiction series and is set in 1870s Minnesota. The story takes readers on a harrowing journey through grasshopper plagues, economic crisis and threatening Indian tensions. Simar’s descriptive writing and vivid imaginings accurately depicts the stark isolation of immigrant life and the many challenges faced by Minnesotans struggling to tame the land.
