The Washington High School class of 1958 will meet for coffee at 10 a.m. Wednesday at NW Pizza/Boardwalk Bread and Bagel.
Crow Wing County Genealogical Society
The Crow Wing County Genealogical Society will meet at the Crow Wing Historical Society and Museum at 6 p.m. Thursday for a general business meeting with a Power Point presentation of the museum and historical society at 7 p.m. at 320 Laurel Street, Brainerd. Brainerd Legion upcoming events
Commander Chris’ all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast will be 8 a.m. to noon Sunday at the Legion. Cost is $7.
A spaghetti dinner fundraiser for “Beyond the Yellow Ribbon” will be 5 p.m. until gone Wednesday at the Legion. Cost for adults, $7, and children, $4. All proceeds go to assist families of service members who will be deployed. For those interested, donations are being accepted at the American Legion Post No. 255, 708 Front St., Brainerd, payable to “Beyond the Yellow Ribbon dinner.”
An apple brandy pork loin dinner by Mike Dallaire will be served from 5:30 p.m. until gone Thursday at the Legion. Cost: $11 ($10 with a presale ticket).
North Country Plus
North Country Plus will have a dance on Sunday at the Nisswa American Legion. There will be a short meeting before the dance at 7 p.m. The dance will be a Plus Dance and starts at 7:30 p.m. Myron Hollatz will be the caller. All Plus Square Dancers are welcome. Casual attire.
NAMI Peer Support Group offered in Wadena
WADENA — A NAMI Connection peer support group for adults recovering from mental illness will meet weekly in Wadena starting June 3. The free group is sponsored by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) of Minnesota. Trained facilitators who are also in recovery lead NAMI Connection groups. The group will meet from 9:30-11:00 a.m. Fridays at Wadena Tri-County Hospital, 415 Jefferson St., Wadena, Room B. For more information, contact Roselene at (218) 296-0491.
Howes to speak at services
BACKUS — State Rep. Larry Howes, R-Walker, will give Memorial Day addresses at Backus and Ponto lake cemeteries conducted by the Backus American Legion and Auxiliary.
Howes, serving his seventh term representing North Central Minnesota’s District 4B, is chairman of the House Capital Investment Committee which reviews and approves Minnesota public construction projects.
The Backus Legion tribute to deceased veterans who served their country will include a color guard rifle salute, laying of a memorial poppy wreath and taps presented by a student and music instructor from the Pine River-Backus School district. Backus services will begin at 10 a.m. and the Ponto Lake service will follow the conclusion of the Backus memorial at approximately 11 a.m., both on May 30.
Howes and his wife, Myrna, reside at Walker. He has been active in supporting small businesses in the Legislature and received a Guardian of Small Businesses Award in 2010 from the National Federation of Independent Businesses. The Howes have a son and son-in-law who have served overseas tours in the military and the representative has encouraged his constituents to be aware of and take advantage of veterans programs that assist returning service members and their families.
Baxter Lions Club
The Baxter Lions Club will meet on Monday at Camp Vanasek. Dinner is at 6:30 p.m. and the regular meeting is at 7 p.m.

Alpha Chapter No. 23 OES
Alpha Chapter No. 23 OES will have a memorial service at the Monday meeting at the Masonic Hall. Dinner will be 6 p.m. served by Judy and Gary Whiteman. The meeting will be 7:30 p.m. Refreshments following will be served by Carol Schwarzkopf.
VFW Friday night dinner planned
The VFW Friday night meatloaf dinner will be served by the Disabled American Veterans from 5:30 p.m. until gone Friday. Cost: $8.
BNSF Vets Association
The BNSF Vets Association will meet at 9 a.m. Tuesday for a breakfast meeting at the Northwind Grille. We’ll be discussing the June convention.

Get a bargain yard and bake sale planned
BACKUS — The Backus Lions will have its annual Get a Bargain Yard and Bake sale from 9 a.m. to noon May 28 at the Backus Corner Store parking lot, Highway 371 and Fourth St. NW.
Proceeds from this sale benefit the philanthropic activity of the Backus Lions Club including high school scholarships, food shelves, Christmas For Kids, Relay for Life, service dog organizations, our local schools and nursing homes.
